Yes, we have discussed it quite some in Gramps-dev, I was going to implement it, but then I tried waiting for hooks with which this could be a plugin rather than a patch. Anyway it'd be nice if someone else would become interested in doing this (I don't mean just you, anyone). My current understanding is that setable defaults are the best option.
