From Gramps
For animal pedigree, you need to follow the translation manual:

So, there is no en.po, because gramps is already in english. Therefore, you use the gramps.pot file, merge in the previous animal po file, then translate the other strings you want translated.
If you subscribe to gramps-devel mailing list, you could post your desires there, and we could make a grampscattle translation domain, and a command line argument to start gramps up with that translation domain. Would be more clean than the current hack with po file. Procedure to translate would be the same though.
