Also added a Hebrew category for Documentation.

Translation of the user manual

Hi Sam,

Now that I'm done translation the GUI, I'm planning on doing the wiki next (that is if I'll be able to figure it out ;-) )... Any idea how to make the page RTL? Also on the global wiki, translation happens in media wiki where they have a 'translate' tab showing; English (original text) and target language side by side, which i do not see here. am i doing something wrong?

My regards Avi ---

Thanks for translating the Gramps program GUI.
To make the Gramps Wiki Mediawiki install understand RTL (eg: multilingual) and to enable the side by side translation option you see on mediawiki it looks like I'll need to possibly do a number of things:
  • Install the MediaWiki_Language_Extension_Bundle which includes the Translate & UniversalLanguageSelector extensions as they now requires MediaWiki >= 1.32.0!
Which means that I would need to
  • Upgrade this wiki from the LTS(Long term support) version(1.31.3 supported until June 2021) to the Stable version (1.33.1 supported until June 2020) at least or I should wait until the next (LTS version 1.35.x is released June 2020 and supported until June 2023)
The other option is to:
  • Keep the current Mediawiki version and find an older version of the extensions and attempt to make that work.(which from a quick look around at the mailing list is not really recommended
Not sure when I'll be able to do any of this but I'll decide after researching this a bit more.
In the mean time current translators have made copies of the existing English pages and then translated them which sorry is not ideal for keeping the translations synchronized.

I just checked and you accidentally copied the wrong page contents over here so I've copied the correct content for that page from here
Ok, I believe That you where attempting to translate the contents of the following page, so I've moved your partial translation a new Hebrew page

In this case, perhaps it will be better to wait with the Hebrew translation at the moment, since without the right-to-left support, sentences looks really weird, especially when there are Latin characters or symbols in the sentence that should remain as is. What say you?

Sorry to hear that it does not look right. Found another page on mediwiki)about Directionality_support that mentions using a template to display the text correctly, so I created the suggested template(called Rtl) exmaple using this is below, does this look right to you?:

Sure does! So just encapsulate the Hebrew text with {{Rtl|=נסיון is this how it works? Still, the actual translation process is quit tedious; copy the original text to a word processor, translating to Hebrew, encapsulate with the above, coping the original age to a he page, paste into the he page then cross my fingers hopping it will work ;-(

>>In this case, perhaps it will be better to wait with the Hebrew translation at the moment,..

As you mention the process is quite tedious, so please give me a few weeks to see what I can do. Sam888 (talk) 02:21, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

Sure lets do that, just drop me a message when you are done.

Ok

Revert non English edit by You

Hi I've reversed the non English edits you did to the English page, please make sure you edit the correct page in future. GulliblePangolin (talk) 12:45, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for that Sam888 (talk) 02:14, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Redirects

Hi, for redirects to work you need to use double square brackets.

Duplicate Page

These look like duplicate pages?

Which one is the correct one? Sam888 (talk) 23:16, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Indeed they are... the first one 'https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/He:%D7%A6%D7%A8%D7%95_%D7%A7%D7%A9%D7%A8' needs to go. there are some other pages I need to delete too but do not have the proper authorization. --avma (talk) 06:09, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Ok, for the each of the pages you want deleted please add them to the Deletion request category eg [[Category:Deletion request]] and I will delete as needed. Thanks for your efforts. Sam888 (talk) 06:44, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
Done! one more question... is there a way I can translate the wiki side panel as well? I logged a bug report 0012319 with a screenshot (although I'm not sure i was suppose to log it as a bug) --avma (talk) 07:31, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, to translate the sidebar please read the following page on details of the multilingual policy for this Gramps wiki. https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Gramps:Language_policy Sam888 (talk) 07:37, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
Once you have the translation for the sidebar please send it to [email protected] . If I have any issues I'll contact you directly. Thank you Sam888 (talk) 07:40, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you Sam for handling the sidebar for me.
Your welcome Sam888 (talk) 07:42, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Nikud in Hebrw

Hi Avi,

I had a distant cousin ask some questions about the word processing support for the diacritical marks in biblical Hebrew. (She is a retired translator of a variety of languages... and is learning that dialect.) I am hoping that you have recommendations of tools for transcribing that dialect.

Also curious whether diacritics are something that can be transcribed into Gramps Notes?

Best regards. Brian

Hebrew cantillation or Nikud?

Hi Brian,

Other then the common Punctuation Signs (most of them works the same as in English), there's the Nikud or Nikudis - (diacritical marks shows above and under or within the letters) a system of diacritical signs used to represent vowels or distinguish between alternative pronunciations of letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and, there's the Cantillation - the manner of chanting ritual readings from the Hebrew Bible in synagogue services. The chants are written and notated in accordance with the special signs or marks printed in the Masoretic Text of the Bible, to complement the letters and vowel points.

If she is interested in the Nikud system, there was an old auto-translator launched back in 1996, it might still be available (I'll check...). there are a couple of on-line Nikud translators; https://nakdan.dicta.org.il/ (looks quit advanced with multiple styles) and http://www.nakdan.com/Nakdan.aspx?lang=eng. It is possible to copy-paste plain text into their screens to translate the plain text to the one with Nikud. This can be used to transcribed Gramps Notes in Hebrew with Nikude.

Now if she is interested in actually learning the Nikud System (which is basically a set of rules with tons on exceptions) she will have to have same basic knowledge of Hebrew. There are a few online sites attempting to do that, I'd start with The Academy of the Hebrew Language https://en.hebrew-academy.org.il/, oh and good luck ;-).

Hope this helps My best regards Avi --avma (talk) 15:35, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Hebrew Spellcheck?

While working on a 'How do I... Troubleshoot Spellcheck?' article. An ArchLinux review noted 2 special case languages. There are providers that only offer a Dictionary & Affix files for a single language. Those are Finnish & Hebrew.

Kari has looked at the Finnish and found it useful (Even though the article has suffered some linkrot.) I thought that you might want to look at the Hebrew provider.

I intend to embed his instructions (after reworking them to fit the article format) for Finnish Spellcheck in the article. Perhaps you will find something that needs to be noted for your community?

Kari writes:

Thanks, interesting.

I hadn't even realized there was a spellchecking feature in Gramps (so many features, so little time - have to read the manual some day :-)

I was aware of Voikko and I believe it is also used by LibreOffice and other applications. I was now able to make it work with Gramps by doing the following (Linux Mint 19):

1. apt install libenchant-voikko
2. extract one of these dictionaries under ~/.voikko: https://www.puimula.org/htp/testing/voikko-snapshot-v5/

By the way, the Voikko link in your message seems to be obsolete. Their current home page is https://voikko.puimula.org

Bamaustin (talk) 13:23, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

interesting indeed

Interesting indeed, Thank you Brian I was not aware of this feature either... don't know why or how, but when I checked the spellcheck settings in Gnuacash, it was already set up. I guess it somehow recognized the Linux pre installed spellchecker (from when I added Hebrew language pack). --avma (talk) 13:19, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
