Other genealogy software
In addition to GRAMPS, there are other Free Software or Open Source genealogy programs. Each project has slightly different goals. If GRAMPS does not meet your needs, you may wish to consider one of the following programs.
GeneWeb is a web based system. A brief description from the GeneWeb web site describes the system as below:
GeneWeb is a genealogy software program with a Web interface. It can be used off-line or in a Web environment. It uses very efficient techniques of relationship and consanguinity computing, developed in collaboration with Didier Rémy, research Director at INRIA.
LifeLines is a text based genealogy system, and probably the first genealogy project available for Linux. The SourceForge project description for LifeLines is as follows:
LifeLines is a genealogy program to help with your family history research. Its primarily strengths are its powerful scripting language and the ability easily import and export information in the GEDCOM format.
Also there is a java interface under MIT licence hosted on sourceforge : JLifeLines.
PhpGedView is a web based genealogy that uses PHP to display GEDCOM files. The description from the PhpGedView website is as follows:
PhpGedView is a revolutionary genealogy program which allows you to view and edit your genealogy on your website. PhpGedView has full editing capabilities, full privacy functions, can import from GEDCOM files, and supports multimedia like photos and document images. PhpGedView also simplifies the process of collaborating with others working on your family tree. Your latest genealogy information is always on your website and available for others to see.
GenealogyJ is a viewer and editor for genealogic data, suitable for hobbyist, family historian and genealogy researcher. GenJ supports the Gedcom standard, is written in Java and offers family tree, table, timeline views and more. GenJ is free software so it can be redistributed and/or be modified under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence as published by the Free Software Foundation.
JcArbGen is a KDE (qt) pedigree tree manager in french and under GPL.
Gedail generates a Web genealogical site from a Gedcom file based on the gedcom 5.5 standard. It doesn't handle all gedcom elements and is under GPL.
monSSG is under GPL.
You manage a mySQL database with PHP interface. Looks like GeneWeb. There is a lot of PHP programs (geneotree, genmod, exodus, retrospect-GDS) maybe monSSG is the easiest to configure under Linux local.
utilspl are useful GPL perl script working with GEDCOM.
@RBRE is an opened collaboratif project related to non commercial. It is developed on the initiative of Cultural Laboratory A+H and published under ArtLibre licence. The SourceForge project description for @RBRE is as follows:
@rbre uses X3D to let people create, visualize, browse and share genealogical data, by using 2D individual icons assembled in 3D family trees. @rbre will include P2P functions for sharing.
In addition to Free Software and Open Source Software programs, there are no cost, shareware and commercial genealogy applications. It is not the goal of the GRAMPS project to promote such products, since they do not preserve the user's freedom and can lock the user's data out of his/her control.
For more information on no cost, shareware and commercial, see Cyndi's List.
