If GRAMPS is started without a database family tree selected, the initial screen will have little functionality. Most operations will not be available. To load a database, select either family tree (also referred to as ''database'New''' to create a new database), or select in the menu '''OpenFamily Trees->Manage Family Trees''' to open an existing databasethe family tree manager, or click the {{man button|Family Tree}} icon in the toolbar. GRAMPS Gramps keeps track of your recently opened databasesFamily Trees, and these can be selected by clicking on the arrow next to the {{man button|OpenFamily Tree}} button and choosing from the drop down menu.
