How to add a witness to an event.

Create the witness as person

We strongly suggest to add the witness related to the persons in your family tree. So go to the People category view, and add them. In many cases, the only information you have of that the person is his name, and a date on which he was certainly alive.

Create the event

Create the event that has a witness. Eg the marriage event is added to a family, the will event to a person. These have the role 'Primary' in relation to the event, 'Family' on this family event (which can be set at the top of the event reference editor).

Add all people to the marriage event

Now, share this same event with the witness if this person is in the family tree. However, assign that person a "witness" role in the event. You can do this by selecting the the witness from the People category view, then in the person editor select the Events tabs, and select Share an existing event instead of Add a new personal event. From the Select Event dialog chose the event you just created, and in the Event Reference Editor set the Role to Witness from the dropdown list.

The event is now a shared event.

Alternative: don't create a person

Some people are averse to adding people to their family tree they only have a name of. First, allow us to point out why you should nevertheless make a person:

  • Gramps supports this
  • You might encounter the same person again in your research. Having him in the person view increases the likely-hood of you recognizing it is the same person as the one that appears as witness.
  • The Find Duplicates tool has more information to work with.

If you nevertheless want to record the witness, without creating a person, use the attribute tab of the event instead. You can add to the event in the attribute tab, the attribute of type witness, and with as value the name.

Alternatively, you can just record this information in a note attached to the event.
